We recently published our review of MSI’s latest Crosshair 16 HX AI gaming laptop and were so impressed with its combination of performance, features and value that it won both our Best Gaming Laptop award and overall Best Laptop award. This was in part due to its inclusion of Nvidia’s latest GeForce RTX 5070 graphics chip which offers a popular, sweet-spot combination of both performance and value. What is Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5070 GPU?
A quick overview is that the GeForce RTX 5070 represents Nvidia’s upper mid-range of AI-enhanced GPUs that are designed to run the latest-and-greatest games (potentially with full eye-candy effects at resolutions of 1,440p and beyond) plus AI applications, without breaking the bank. Technological highlights include the latest DLSS 4 AI-upscaling technology (which massively boosts framerates up to UHD resolutions); and fourth-gen RT cores (for enhanced ray-tracing-based realism).
In techie terms, the 5070 Ti variant is more powerful than the straight 5070 thanks to an increase in CUDA cores (8,960 vs 6,144); higher core frequency (2.3 vs 2.16GHz); a wider GDDR7 memory interface (256-bit vs 192-bit) and subsequent memory bandwidth (896GB/s vs 692GB/s); more VRAM (12GB vs 8GB); a higher TGP; and more AI-processing power (1,406 vs 988 TOPS). Translated, that jargon means that the 5070 GPUs are much faster than the previous generation and the 5070 Ti is about 30 per cent faster than the straight 5070 which costs less.
MSI Stealth A18 AI+
Want an 18-inch, desktop-replacement, gaming laptop (or AiPC) that’s slim enough to carry around? Then the MSI Stealth A18 AI+ is for you. It weighs just 2.89KG which is lighter than many rivals with much-smaller footprints. The magnesium-aluminium alloy chassis is both lightweight and sturdy enough to survive life on the road. This gaming laptop’s impressive features include, Microsoft CoPilot+ compatibility and a rapid, 240Hz, OLED display for silky-smooth gaming. The MSI Stealth 16 AI is a 16-inch gaming-cum-business laptop that’s based around Intel’s powerful (and efficient) Core Ultra 9 285H processor. It too is highly portable thanks to its huge 99.9Wh battery, solid Mg-Al alloy chassis, 2.1KG weight and 19.95mm thickness. Interacting with it is great thanks to the speedy, 240Hz OLED screen that supports 100 per cent of the tricky DCI-P3 colour gamut (that designers will love) and six-speakers (including four woofers) that delivered punchy, well-rounded audio. MSI’s Vector range is another long-time favourite of ours. The understated exterior is cool but not flashy and so, when you turn off the RGB, it will easily hide in an office. On the inside, however, it’s a full-blown gaming laptop whose AI chops will also suit STEM professionals, engineers and programmers.
