How to fix a washed out screen on an MSI laptop

If your new (or old) MSI laptop has a washed out screen and videos look terrible with banding and blocky graphics, worry not… it’s a known issue with a relatively straightforward fix.

The washed out issue is caused by a conflict between MSI’s True Color screen calibration app and the Intel graphics driver. Now as much as we hate the term ‘known issue’ – if you know about it, fix it dangit! – this one isn’t the worst you’ll likely face in your computing life. Below we’ve provided a too-long-didn’t-read fix for those who know what they’re doing plus a step-by-step, walk-through guide for those who worry about performing light software surgeries.

  1. Uninstall MSI True Color
  2. Download DDU and perform a clean uninstall of the Intel graphics driver
  3. Reboot
  4. Let Windows Update reinstall the Intel Graphics Driver
  5. Open MSI Center and re-install True Colour

How to fix my washed out MSI laptop screen: Step by Step solution

Step 1: Press the Windows Key and type Control Panel.

Step 3: Click Uninstall a program.

Step 4: Type msi true color in the search box (or scroll to find it in the list).

Step 5: Click on MSI True Colour and select Uninstall. Follow the prompts to uninstall it.

Step 6: Download DDU uninstaller software by following this link, scrolling down and clicking on one of the links beneath Download Locations.

Step 7: Right-click on the downloaded file and click Extract All…

Step 8: Run the extracted DDU file by double clicking on it.

Step 9: Click Extract on the DDU program (yes, that’s two extractions in a row!)

Step 11: Run the Display Driver Uninstaller application by double clicking on it.

Step 12: You are asked if you want to reboot into Safe Mode. We tried this process numerous times and found this was unecessary but if you do want to do this, learn how to launch Windows in Safe Mode here. Either way, click OK.

Step 13: Select GPU and Select Intel. Double check that you have selected these correctly.

Step 14: When you are certain you’ve selected GPU and Intel – and you have saved any work you might have open – click Clean and restart. Note: The screen will do funny things before rebooting – this is normal.

Step 15: Once rebooted, press the Windows Key and type Windows Update Settings and click on it.

Step 16a: At this point we hit a minor fork in the road. Simply clicking on Check for updates *should* automatically reinstall the Intel GPU driver. However, if it doesn’t go to Step 16b.

Step 17: You will see a list of Updates available. Monitor the Intel files downloading and click Install now.

Step 18: Launch MSI Center. Select Support. Tick the box for MSI True Color. Click Download.

And that’s it. You did it!

For those who don’t like loose ends… MSI Center displays the Intel Graphics Driver as an optional download no matter what you do at this stage. We’ve tried installing it from here – before and after True Color – and it doesn’t appear to do anything or break anything even if it appears to download. So, as much as we hate giving out such advice… please just ignore MSI Center’s Intel Graphics Driver option!
