MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Hands-On Review

Computex doesn’t always throw up surprises, but MSI certainly bucked the trend on Day 1 of the Taiwanese trade show by launching the MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Limited Edition laptop. This was part of a partnership announcement with the eponymous, top-tier racing team – an entity which features the likes of Lewis Hamilton wearing an IWC Schaffhausen watch in its other marketing.

Update: Read our full, in-depth, MSI Mercedes laptop review

While, the partnership doesn’t extend to Formula 1, it will be seen on lower racing tiers and across the shared-world of SIM racing.

The final specs haven’t been locked down yet, we did get extensive time with the engineering samples on display at Computex. We couldn’t test for performance, but we got a very good feel of what was coming.

Features, Ergonomics & Design

The MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport has the same ‘Selenite Gray’ coloured-chassis that’s synonymous with the Silver Arrow’s traditional livery. The metallic finish enwraps the plastic chassis which is firm and robust. The stiff lid only flexes a little when a twisting force is applied. While we kinda-really-wanted it to be an actual metal finish, it still looks great. It’s also good at fending-off fingerprints.

Understated bling.

There are many cool details on the MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, too. These include Mercedes-AMG’s ‘Rhombuses’ pattern on the space bar, around the webcam, on the rubber feet (which feel like tyre-treads) and also along an RGB-backlit, silver strip at the rear. The silver start button with red lettering is small but stylish in the top right corner. It looks as cool as you’d hope.

It’s the little details that add up to a lot.

The screen is a glossy, 4K, 3,840 x 2,400, OLED display which supports 100 per cent of the difficult DCI-P3 colour gamut. It’s very reflective but colours are vibrant and bright and contrast is impressive. We couldn’t play games on it for testing but we were nonetheless surprised to see it had a 60Hz refresh rate. We were told by the product manager that faster screens would be available later, though.

MSI also makes a plane version of the Stealth 16. But, then you don’t have the space bar with Mercedes-AMG’s rhombuses.

There are six speakers in the MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport: two 2-Watt speakers plus four (count’em!) 2-Watt Woofers. They fire up, down, left and right and produce a very impressive, well-rounded audio with punchy bass.

The Steelseries RGB keyboard looks great with its (almost pastel-shade) RGB, per-key backlighting. It felt very comfortable and accurate in the limited time we had with it. Arrow keys are reduced in size, but not squished. The same goes for the number pad. The trackpad is large, smooth and accurate.

The RGB Steelseeries keyboard has a subtle, pastel tone to its backlighting.

The webcam’s resolution is Full HD and supports Windows Hello facial recognition (as does a fingerprint reader near the trackpad). There’s also a red privacy slide which looks good when surrounded by the Merc detailing.

Cool webcam details.

All in all we’ve very high hopes for the MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport based on the ergonomics and looks. It might not be as ostentatious as the cool Acer Ferrari and Asus Lamborghini laptops of yore, but this is German not Italian and it will fit into any environment and impress people. We do hope a fast OLED gaming screen gets fitted – like on the MSI Raider GE67 HX which has a UHD, OLED screen with a 240Hz refresh rate.

Performance

We couldn’t benchmark the MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport and the final spec hasn’t been finalised anyway. It will have a beefy 13th-Gen, Intel Core-i9 processor and be available with either an Nvidia GEForce RTX 4060 or 4070 GPU.

There will be two DDR5 memory slots and two, speedy PCIe 4.0 NVMe hard drive slots.

There’s even a Merc-tweaked version of MSI Center controls. Note that this engineering sample actually sported an Nvidia 4050.

Cooling comes via MSI’s Cooler Boost 5 technology which has two fans and five heat pipes. We did note that the demo model ran warm, but wasn’t very noisy – although we were in a noisy environment at the time. If it’s like all previous Stealth’s, the MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport is likely to get a bit noisy.

Connectivity

On the right is a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port (with power delivery), a USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Inside there’s Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. It’s an impressive connection complement.

Portability

The MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport weighs 1.88KG which is borderline ultraportable but very impressive considering it’s a 16-inch, high-performance, gaming laptop. It uses a reduced-size power brick with Mercedes-AMG detailing.

The rhombuses on the rubber ‘feet’ look like race-car tyre-treads.

Inside there’s a massive 99.9Whr battery and MSI tells us this will last 10 hours.

We like a stylish, slim-line power supply.

It certainly feels well-built enough to survive life on the road.

Overall

It’s not the most ostentatious racing team collaboration, but the MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport feels like a laptop you can see anyone (including the drivers) at the Mercedes-AMG team, wanting to use. You’ll certainly be seeing Mercedes’ and MSI’s sponsored eRacers using it in the coming months.

It’s unlikely to be cheap, but then what do you expect for top-end, exclusivity. It’s also just made MSI that bit cooler and will hopefully increase the desirability of high performance PCs to high performance motoring enthusiasts.
