Acer unveils new Predator Helios Neo 18 and Neo 16 gaming laptops at CES

Acer announces new 16” and 18” Predator Helios and Neo gaming laptops (plus local pricing and availability) at CES

Following a succession of sober-looking gaming laptops that could also fit inside an office, Acer has unveiled new, aggressive-looking, flagship, gaming laptops at the CES tech expo in Las Vegas: the Predator Helios 18 and Predator Helios 16. The new models are long-awaited updates to Acer’s top-tier, Predator Helios gaming laptop line which last manifested in Australia in the form of 2022’s 12th-Gen Acer Predator Helios 300. Acer also announced two, new, more-wallet-friendly gaming laptops, the Predator Helios Neo 18 and Predator Helios Neo 16 and provided pricing and availability details for all models, for Australia.

The new flagship gaming laptops feature Intel’s brand-new 14th-Gen ‘Meteor Lake’ Core i9-14900HX processor which has an Ai-focused neural processing unit (NPU). They’re also available with Nvidia’s top-end, GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs and feature a maximum TGP (Total Graphics [electrical] Power) of 175 Watts to help them achieve their maximum performance potential. Both are cooled by Acer’s 5th-Gen AeroBlade 3D cooling system (which we previously saw in the Predator Triton 17 X)

Both models have a dedicated key for activating Microsoft’s Ai-based Copilot task assistance app in Windows 11. Plus, there are options to utilise the same mini-LED displays, which impressed us with their colour, contrast, speed, HDR compatibility and un-OLED-like, matte finishes, that we saw before on the HP Omen Transcend 16 and Acer Predator Triton 17 X. Acer says they have [an impressive] 1000-nit brightness, [fast] 250Hz refresh rates and support 100 per cent of the difficult DCI-P3 colour gamut.

Acer adds that both gaming laptops will feature MagKey 3.0 swappable mechanical switches for shorter key travel and response times. Each key is individually RGB-back-lit and so are the lid’s Predator logo and the rear-mounted, “Infinity Mirror” lighting bar.

Other notable features include Wi-Fi 7 and hidden messages on the anodised lids (which we saw on the previous-generation’s Acer Predator Helios Neo 16).

James Lin, General Manager, Notebooks at Acer Inc, said, “We are excited to unveil the new Predator Helios gaming laptop lineup for 2024, offering the combination of performance, advanced thermal capabilities and brilliant displays. Powered by Intel Core (14th Gen) HX-Series processors, the laptops’ capabilities are pushed further and are ready to take on new gaming adventures that lie ahead.”

Intel’s Robert Chandler, VP and GM, Enthusiast PC and Workstation at Intel, added, “The new Acer Predator Helios is a beautiful laptop that truly unleashes the performance of our new Intel Core (14th Gen) HX-Series processors. Acer’s advanced cooling technologies keep our processors cool and running fast, combined with a great selection of display, memory, and storage options that make the Predator Helios 16 and 18 a great choice for gamers and creators.”

The Predator Helios 18 (PH18-72) will be available in Australia in Q1 2024, starting at $6,499.

The Predator Helios 16 (PH16-72) will be available in Australia in Q1 2024, starting at $3,399

Multiple SKUs are available and they stretch down from Intel’s Core i9-14900HX processor and Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4070 (which has a maximum TGP of 140 Watts when in Turbo mode) GPU. The new laptops can be configured with up to 32GB of DDR5-5600 RAM and two, 1TB, PCIe Gen 4, NVMe hard drives running in RAID 0 mirroring for extra performance. Cooling is, again, catered for by Acer’s 5th-Gen AeroBlade 3D technology

The new Neos come with UHD, 2560 x 1600 resolution, IPS, Nvidia G-Sync displays which have a 240Hz refresh rate and are also capable of displaying 100 per cent of the DCI-P3 colour space. They also have four-zone, RGB keyboards.
