Getac Technology Corporation (Getac) is taking steps toward sustainability by adopting SORPLAS, an environmentally conscious plastic from Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS), in its premium rugged laptops and tablets. The initiative underscores a commitment to reducing environmental impact in technology manufacturing by increasing the use of sustainable materials across its product lineup.
The integration begins with Getac’s S510 rugged laptop and K120 fully rugged tablet, designed to withstand the demands of industrial and field environments. These products mark the start of Getac’s broader plans to incorporate SORPLAS into more of its devices.
What is SORPLAS?
Developed by SSS, SORPLAS achieves up to 99 per cent utilisation of recycled materials. The material is known for its durability in challenging conditions, including high temperatures and humidity, where conventional plastics often fail. It’s already used in Sony’s own products and now finds applications outside Sony, including in Getac’s rugged devices.
Incorporating SORPLAS means a reduced environmental footprint in comparison to traditional virgin flame-retardant polycarbonate resin. According to SSS, the amount of CO2 released during SORPLAS production is significantly lower, making it a beneficial choice for companies looking to minimise their carbon impact.
Eita Yanagisawa, Senior General Manager at Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation, stated, “The technology industry has a collective responsibility to protect our planet for future generations. SORPLAS embodies our commitment to this responsibility by using recycling technology to achieve a high utilisation rate of recycled materials. It is already widely used in Sony products, and we’re excited to bring it to a broader audience through partnerships with environmentally conscious companies like Getac.”
Getac’s Commitment to Sustainable Innovation
Getac has long aimed to harness technology for environmental sustainability, particularly by increasing the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials in its product development. By adopting SORPLAS, Getac reinforces its focus on delivering products that meet rigorous durability and reliability standards while promoting environmental responsibility.
James Hwang, President of Getac Technology Corporation, said, “Getac is firmly committed to creating a more sustainable future through environmentally responsible design and manufacturing. Implementing SORPLAS in our rugged devices is the latest step in this journey. We look forward to working closely with Sony Semiconductor Solutions to expand its use across more of our products, supporting a sustainable future.”
Future of Sustainable Rugged Technology
The launch of the S510 and K120 represents only the beginning for Getac, which plans to incorporate SORPLAS across more of its product range. The company envisions that its growing commitment to sustainable materials will align with its long-term objectives, providing customers with environmentally friendly yet robust solutions in rugged technology.
Getac’s adoption of PCR materials and focus on sustainability come as part of a broader industry trend. As more tech companies shift toward eco-conscious practices, Getac is positioning itself to meet rising customer expectations for sustainable products that do not compromise on performance or durability.
